Sherry’s Review: Gone Tonight – The Book Review Crew

Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen is a captivating read that kept me engaged from start to finish. With multiple narrators and contrasting opinions, the story took unexpected twists and turns. It revolves around a mother and daughter with a mysterious past that slowly unravels throughout the book.

The format of the story, with two different points of view and Ruth documenting their journey, was a perfect fit. Ruth tries to protect her daughter by keeping secrets, but feels the need to write down everything that has happened. This creates tension and raises questions about what exactly they are hiding.

While neither of the characters may be likable and certain points of the story may seem implausible, it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. The build-up of suspense and tension was just right, making it impossible for me to put the book down. There were moments when I found myself on the edge of my seat, eager to discover what would happen next.

Overall, Gone Tonight is a thrilling and compelling read that will keep you hooked until the very end. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping psychological thriller.

I was lucky enough to buddy read this one and it kept me so engaged with all the different opinions on what was happening and where this one was headed. I was very quick to believe both of our narrators are reliable while not all in my group were so easily swayed. Told from a mother and daughter’s POVs the reader is privy to there is something in their past, but not what that is.

This format was a great fit for this story. Not only is there two POVs, but Ruth is documenting what has happened to get them to where they are now. Ruth is lying to her daughter and trying to protect her to the best of her ability. And fearful she might not be able to come clean, she is writing an account of what happened and what she has kept from her daughter Catherine.

I am not sure either character is likable or if the story remains plausible at all points, but seriously none of that mattered as I read this one. There was the perfect amount of build up and tension to make me need to know their story and what would happen to them. Quite a few times I was on the edge of my seat.
